Cortisol — The Stress Hormone

Stress affects health in many ways, unfortunately none of them affects well-being in a good way. Many health specialists claim, as normal human experience would confirm, that stress and depression can have negative effects on physical health. Burnout is a deep-seated sense of disillusionment and exhaustion with a job or career that used to provide so much excitement and motivation. No one is exempted from burnout. It happens even to highly committed and passionate individuals who encounter problems or get involved in situations where their enthusiasm and passion are gradually being stripped away until they eventually lose the drive and will to go on. It can be a situation or a thought that can weigh you down or make you feel frustrated and angry.

Job strain, as specifically defined by researchers, involves high psychological demands with low decision control. If the stress of the job doesn\’t change upon return to work, there is a much higher risk of having another heart attack or developing angina and coronary heart disease.

Taking a much-needed vacation may help address the problem of exhaustion and boredom but it may not be effective in totally eliminating the sense of disillusionment, stress and anxiety. Here are some ways people resort to in dealing with a stressful situation like burnout:* Going Through The Motions – Some people deal with burnout by not dealing with it at all. To accept it and not do anything about it is one of the worst way to deal with burnout. Such indifference will soon result to anger and bitterness as opportunities pass you by.

* Career Change – When the passion and drive that used to inspire you to do your best have been snuffed out, disabling you from going on further with your career, it\’s time to consider making that shift. A new profession will certainly give you a new perspective. However, changing career may not credit some of the precious experiences you have already gained as relevant to your newfound endeavor. Moreover, competition will most likely come from much younger people who are willing to accept lower salaries thus affecting your bargaining power.

* Changing Jobs – a change of job within the same field of endeavor or profession is just like having the same job but in a totally different environment. Your skills and the previous experiences you have acquired will be transferable and allows you to re-dedicate your original goals to start anew, without being reminded of the burdens that come with staying on the same job.Individuals who were disillusioned with their previous employers may benefit in job change. However, the downside of this response is the possibility that you may end up with the same situation again if the cause of burnout is the job itself and not the other factors such as management and co-workers.

Affordable Non-Drug solution to Depression

Up until recently, there were four choices for persons with Depression. These were:1. Do nothing, suffer and hope it\’ll get better with time. This is the sad choice of many, and it doesn\’t work. They most often get worse.

2. Put them on one of the huge advertised array of drugs, and then put them on other drugs hoping to solve the side effects as they show up. This is known as the drug \”side effect chain\”. (My ex-wife once ended up taking six different drugs in this way, and the end effect was that she got worse instead of better – a not uncommon result)

However, when these same people are not drinking heavily, only 5 per cent of men and 10 per cent of woman have symptoms meeting the need to be diagnosed for depression.

For those who aren\’t familiar with EEG BF, this is the most effective brain training mechanism that best solves this particular brain problem. (It also solves ADHD, insomnia, IBS, epilepsy, and even many cases of schizophrenia. There is substantial proof of this effectiveness of EEG BF, and a summary of professional papers can be found at:. In my former practice as an Orthomolecular Psychologist, I had used auditory messaging with good success, and in 2004, I realized that it should be possible to use this technique to do the same thing that was done by the expensive EEG BF units and a computer. Instead of going thru the conscious mind of the \”trainee\” to affect the unconscious, why not go directly to the unconscious mind?

You may feel anxious, have trouble sleeping or even sleep too much. You may think that your family would be better off without you (and actually believe that to be true) and may have considered running away or suicide.

In the last test, this possible effect was discussed beforehand and warned about, and while it occurred in a few cases, it did not deter any of the volunteers, as it had done in earlier testing. (This is NOT a dangerous \”side effect\” such as can be caused by all drugs! It can cause minor discomfort in a few individuals for only a day or so at worst.) c. Motivation is no longer a huge factor as it is in EEG BF. Both the parents and the child have to motivated to continue long weeks of training, and if the training is stopped before an end point, some, or most, of the gain is lost.2. This system costs under $200, and that is a one-time fee only. It can be used for as long as it takes. (With Autistic children, it can take up to 200 EEG BF sessions). The system is composed of two basic CD\’s. The first is the actual Audio Training program, playable on any CD player, boom box, etc. The second CD is a computer disk that has several other programs useful as adjuncts to this training. This includes a free allergy/sensitivity test, a free bottle of amino acid supplement that has a calming effect, and several articles on alternate health therapies that have been shown to be of help for all types of brain problems.

Anxiety and the Perfect Anti-Anxiety Treatment

To have feelings of uneasiness or nervousness is quite normal for people who have to keep up with the fast pace of the 21st Century lifestyle. Almost everyone feels anxious from time to time. Mild to moderate moments of anxiety may help certain individuals focus their attention, energy, and motivation. However, severe cases of anxiety may lead to feelings of helplessness, confusion, and distress. Too much anxiety, however, is not normal and may interfere with one\’s daily activities. Anxiety can cause physical and mental problems. In some cases, some situations or fears may trigger a variety of symptoms for a short time.

Stress and anxiety brought by everyday challenges at work can affect a person\’s interest and skills in the office. Even if most people are aware of how much competition there is out in the market where only the best lands a job, the stress and anxiety can really take a toll on even the most promising professional. Stress and anxiety, no matter how one tries to avert it, is like a hovering vulture that persistently waits to feast on a \”dead-tired\” person.

In addition to its physical effects, anxiety also affects a part of the brain that aids in communication. This condition may lead to the difficulties in expressing creativity or effective function in relationships.

In a sense, \”anxiety disorder\” is an umbrella phrase for a number of more specific psychiatric disorders. According to the NIMH, anxiety disorders include panic disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, social anxiety disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, specific phobias, and generalized anxiety disorder. Although these are distinct conditions, the one thing they have in common is a sense of fear and dread that is disproportionate to the actual events taking place.

Check on what you know. Updating one\’s knowledge is very essential to improving one\’s craft. Competition in the workplace leaves no room for mediocrity. Those who do not try to improve themselves are actually more prone to stress and anxiety. Jealousy, intrigue, and unfair competition can hurt not only the employees but the company as well. A worker that strives to improve his performance will have lesser things to worry about since he lets his work and outputs do the talking.

Managing stress and anxiety in the office can be done through many ways. It is the same way with improving one\’s work performance. Getting ahead does not always mean being in a frenzy. Improving one\’s work and reducing anxiety may actually entail the act of \”slowing down.\” This is best illustrated in the story of a young woodcutter who tried to impress his boss by always hitting trees in full force every time he swung his axe.

On his first day on the job, the young woodcutter fell the most number of trees. He was trying to show his commitment to the job by never taking breaks.

He just kept swinging at the trees with his axe. But after the third day, the Chief Woodcutter approached the young apprentice and asked, \”How come you now cut less number of trees as you did during the first two days? Even if you did not take breaks, you still finished at the bottom in our team of woodcutters.\”

Finally, the Chief Woodcutter asked the young lad, \”Did you sharpen your axe?\”
